Work Christmas Lunch

Our work Christmas lunch wasn’t all that great last year.  Nothing had been organised, so we wound up just going to the closest pub, the New Sydney.  The food wasn’t great, and it was too noisy to talk.

This year, Verity very intelligently started thinking about it in advance.  We’re not a big work group – only 7 – and it wasn’t so early we would have a million options in the city.  So Tracey had the idea that we could take a water taxi over the river to Bellerive and eat there.  Perfect!  She had The Bob organise the water taxi, and Verity juggled bookings at various restaurants while the rest of us did our best to be indecisive about where we should actually eat.  In the end we wound up at Sails.

The long term forecast had said there might be showers, however as the day approached the forecast improved.  Today we had nothing but sun, blue skies, and wind.  We met up a with the water taxi at the bottom of Murray Street and were soon on our way.  We lucked out not only with the sun, but the Derwent was a bit choppy – much more fun than if it had been a calm day!  The trip across to Bellerive only takes about 15 minutes.

Tracey had warned us the food might not be the greatest, but it wasn’t too bad for pub food.  We’d hoped to get a table out on the balcony, however we actually arrived earlier than our booking so the small table on the balcony was still occupied.  The majority of the balcony was taken up with a 50 person booking, but when we saw them arrive – all males except for one lone female with lots of pitchers of beer on the tables – we were rather happy to be inside!

Afterwards we went downstairs to cbar for a drink before returning to the taxi.  Our captain had agreed to take a few ‘merry’ young lads across with us, so it was an interesting journey.  If they were that far gone at 3 pm, I don’t want to see what they’ll be like at 3 am!

All in all it was a nice work lunch.  A bit more exciting than just going down the pub!
