A Destructive Christmas Eve Morning Walk

Christmas Eve – the last day of work until 5 January 2009 – hooray!  And it’s not much of a work day; Lottie will be in the office and we’ll all goof off and eat food – double hooray!

Scott’s office is breakfasting at T42  rather than goofing off during the day, so Lottie & I dropped him off near Elizabeth Street Pier and continued on to our car park at Princes Shed #2.  Our first objective was to finish off the Boating for Beginners multi-cache.  The final is in a fairly busy spot, so first thing in the morning seemed a good time to go for it.  I found it easily, however then disaster struck: as I was taking the container apart to log it, the larger part of the container slipped out of my hand and fell over a wall.  I had Lottie with me plus work rather than bushwalking shoes, so trying to retrieve it wasn’t an option.  I had another container on me, however although still a micro it’s significantly larger.  Groan.  I’m sorry Roehm!

We continued our walk to work, going past where they are setting up for the Taste of Tasmania.  It seems to have new entry signs this year.  I thought I had a photo of the old ones, but can’t find them on Flickr – however another Flickr user has photos of them.  Yes, slightly daggy, but they’re ‘traditional’.  The new signs are rather boring, so I suspect they fit in with some marketing campaign or are trying to vaguely reflect the website.  Having a whole paragraph devoted to this observation probably makes it seem like this matters to me.  Don’t worry, it doesn’t – it’s just an observation and a reflection of my thoughts while we were walking around this morning.

Calm before the storm; Salamanca Lawns early on Christmas Eve

Next we walked down the Salamanca Lawns. They were so empty and peaceful, however by the end of the day they will probably be caged off with intoxicated humans trapped inside.  They started using the cage last year.  By the end of the work day on Christmas Eve, the Salamanca area is heaving with people released from their offices for the holidays.  Mobile vans are set up as the pubs are too busy to meet the demand, and starting from last year they put temporary chain link fences around the lawn area so the festivities don’t spill into the street too much.  Not the most attractive thing, but probably makes things safer.

We continued on our way through the CBD and to Criterion Street, where I stopped to get a latte and cinnamon toast for brekkie.  Lottie was very well behaved waiting for me on the footpath.  Anyway, I’d best get ‘working’; Verity’s dog Fifi has arrived in the office, so who knows what excitement awaits Lottie!
