SA 2010: Day 2, Pub Lunch and Geocaching!

You know how you usually don’t sleep well when you’re away from home?  Well I didn’t have that problem!  I slept like a dead thing.  If anyone’s going to be staying at FlitterbyG’s, I can highly recommend the middle bedroom.  Without a husband or dog sharing it with me, I could spread out and really get some sleeping done!

I woke up before the rest of the house, so enjoyed having a cup of tea while I watched the birds in the back garden.  What made it even better was I could hear the faint sound of commute traffic and know I wouldn’t be joining it.  🙂

Today we didn’t need to be anywhere until a pub lunch in town at 12:30, so when FlitterbyG got up we had a lot of time to chat, just us.  Oh – and Noble, her cat, actually let me pet him when noone else was looking.  I take photos for the husband to see where I’ve been, so it only seems fair to collect some exotic smells for Lottie.

At 11:30 mundoo arrived so we could all go to the event together. And she had good news: she’d finished the work she needed to get done before Friday, so she’d be able to stay the night at FlitterbyG’s house, then the 3 of us could make our way down to her place at Hindmarsh Island the next day.

The event was great! 10 cachers/teams attended, which is really fantastic when you consider my trip was planned with less than a week’s notice and the event was only listed (by firesafe – THANK YUOU!) on GCA the night before! I got to meet some cachers I’ve known for ages via geocaching / twitter / fb / 12 of 12 / blogs and a few I didn’t know well. The venue was diagonally across the street from firesafe’s place of employment – which for me was really exciting as I’d seen it a few times in his 12 of 12s. And my food was excellent! I only have one rather terrible photo from the event – and unfortunately FlitterbyG is cut off (she was on the far left):

After the event, we did two caches with honeysucker and MtnLioness – which was fun, as always! The second was outside firesafe’s place of employment.

Thank you all for coming on such short notice! And a big thanks to firesafe for listing this and Mundoo for chauffeuring me to the event!!It was such a pleasure to meet everyone – and to meet in the meat world those I’ve known online for a while. If any of you are planning a trip to Tassie, be sure to let me know!

After the GCA pub lunch across the street, a few of us headed here to try for a find. GPSrs had people bouncing in different directions up and down, but the find was eventually made.Thank you for a great hide!

Not only was this cache verrry close to the GCA pub lunch but is also close to a spot I’ve seen featured in firesafe’s 12 of 12, so Iwas looking forward to logging this one. To make the find even more memorable, it was made in the company of MtnLioness, Honeysucker Team, Mundoo, and FlitterbyG! A great hide and a lovely caching memory.Thank you for the hide!

South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service

After we parted ways with honeysucker team and MtnLioness (who were off to try to get a FTF before firesafe could get there), we did a couple caches near the CBD that FlitterbyG and mundoo had already done.

I could see The Destructor rising tall in the skyline as we approached. Almost as impressive was the complete lack of free parking spaces anywhere near by. While mundoo circled the block, I went in to hunt for the cache. I spotted it fairly quickly and put my stealth cache retrieving techniques into play. While signing the cache, some muggles decided to have a smoke VERY close to GZ; I upped the stealth and soon had it back in place. I really liked how well preserved this was and how it was presented – and the hide!Thank you for the cache.

A quick find in some lovely gardens. Luckily the gardeners were on a great as they were doing a lot of work nearby.Thank you for the cache – and for bringing me to this beautiful spot.

Either before or after the next cache, mundoo needed to stop for LPG so also took the opportunity to put her car through the automatic car wash. This probably sounds mundane but was hilarious! She hadn’t put the antenna down before the car wash started, so we could only watch the poor thing get battered around as the car wash went through its various cycles. At one point I tried to put it down while the washing action was at the back of the car but couldn’t get it down before it seemed to be making its way towards me again. And just when we thought it might have survived the washing, the air dry looked like it would snap it off! Poor antenna – it was hilarious!
Will Mundoo's Antenna Survive the Car Wash?!

The next cache had a ‘cache guardian’, and I got a photo of my girls with it.

Found while visiting from Tasmania. After a pub lunch GCA event in the city, FlitterbyG, Mundoo and I were headed south ahead of traffic. The cache description on this one sounded intriguing so we decided to hit this cache. As we approached GZ, a local business made me think I knew what we’d be looking for. The hide was easy, but the cache was fun! When I get home I’ll upload the photo of my caching partners with the cache guardian (who was much nicer than he’s given credit for).Thank you for the cache!

Found while out geocaching with Mundoo and FlitterbyG. As we were walking towards GZ, Mundoo spied a muggle behind us so we slowed down so he would pass us before we got to the cache location. However as he passed us he said ‘happy hunting’, so I suspect he wasn’t a muggle!Thank you for the cache.

My last find of the day as the sun had set and light was failing. I kept not trusting my GPSr, but as soon as I did I found the cache as the coordinates were spot-on for me. I think the terrain rating for this cache should be a bit higher; it was a bit of a challenge for my caching friend who isn’t as used to tripping up and down slopes.Thank you for the cache!

After this the light was fading, so we headed back to FlitterbyG’s house for the night.  We chatted and laughed, and of course got onto our computers to log our finds and chat ‘the proper way’, on twitter.  😉
