SW VIC 2010 Day 2: The Great Ocean Road

We woke up and got moving fairly slowly.  We weren’t in Anglesea for brekkie until about 9 am.  At Anglesea we ate at a bakery (which was INSANELY cheap!), but the best part of the town that we saw were the loos.  Their paint jobs were fantastic!  The women’s loo was painted as a dress shop; the men’s loo was a tool shed.  Unfortunately I only got one photo fo the tool shed as some bloke wanted to use the loo – without some random woman photographing him.  Go figure.

Then we were on the road and caching! We only did drive-by caches so that we could just cache our way along the road. My favourites for most of the day were Mr Emu’s Lame Guardrail Cache series.  They were perfect for the trip: easy drive-bys near parking, easy to find, and in scenic spots (well, it would have been hard to put them in un-scenic spots!).  We had a coffee break in Lorne, but basically enjoyed the drive and caching stops to take in the scenery.

Not long after passing through Apollo Bay we came across a sign for a rainforest walk, so being good Tasmanians we had to stop, walk, and photograph. The signage was a bit primary school, but we successfully took photographs that we could have taken in Tassie, so all was not lost.

After having a quick walk we were back on the road and Scott made the bestest decision ever: to head down to the Cape Otway Lighthouse. The lighthouse was a bit meh – we didn’t have very good lighthouse luck on this trip at all! But we had KOALA luck – koalas in the wild! Trillions of them!

KOALAS FTW!!!

Then we had a nice lunch at Lavers Hill and the next stop was the 12 Apostles (or the Sow and Piglets as they were called before they were re-badged for tourism purposes).

I must say the 12 Apostles lookout was a bit of a (polite) zoo, however there were other lookouts at spots equally (or sometimes more IMHO) stunning that were empty. Which is fine; leave them for us. We drove along the coast, stopping at lookouts and doing Earthcaches, until we got to Warrnambool – our destination for the night. It had been a hot day, so we were looking forward to camping at the Warrnambool Showgrounds, which ozcamps.net informed me had hot showers.  We found it, paid our fees, and scoped out the camping situation.  The dog races were happening, so we headed off to find food. And we found GREAT food at a place called Logan’s Cafe and Restaurant. It was really busy even on a Thursday, but the locals obviously knew what they were doing. We had Red Snapper in a Light Thai Red Curry and a Warm Moroccan Chicken Salad. Both were so excellent that we decided to go crazy and have dessert too, Toffee Basket with a Trio of Gelatos and Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding. Fantastic!

The food was really great. We were a little worried that the dog races might be going late (they did near where I lived in Sydney so they could be broadcast live to places in Asia that like betting on them), however when we arrived back at 1 minute before 9 pm all the dogs were gone and the showgrounds were dark. So we had some showers – lovely warm showers where we got clean! Scott was so excited he did a bit of finger disco dancing on our back-of-the-camper dance floor before retiring for the evening.
