Some Geocaching and Some Geocachers!

Saturday morning, and Lottie & I really wanted to head out to do some geocaches.  It was too hot in the house – a couple days’ build-up of heat had made the house too hot for comfort (unusual for us as our house is always colder inside than out – even in winter).  However it was also too warm to contemplate a bushwalk, so we headed north where there were a few drive-bys awaiting us.

View across the Derwent towards Mt DirectionAs I headed north, I noticed an unfound cache I didn’t recall seeing published, Walkies.  I headed to it and knew how to access the spot (all old-timers will!).  And it was a FTF!  I would have been published while I was playing with Pocket Queries earlier in the morning (Tassie will soon be 3 queries instead of 2).  Lottie liked this one and probably wanted to go for a swim, but mean ol’ me wouldn’t let her.

Next cache was Monsters Playground.  While having a hunt around someone honked.  When I reached my first cache in New Norfolk proper, Was Arthur really such a square, and saw March Brown’s log for 30 Jan ’09, I sent him a text message asking if he was in NN and had honked going past Monsters Playground.  No.  It was 31Jan – oop!  Oh well – just hope someone doesn’t fint my FTF at Walkies was the result of inside info!

Next I tried for a cache in the middle of the ‘CBD’, however I was a bit worried by how busy it was.  I spent a bit of time scoping this one out and was quite certain where it would be but needed to think out the stealth side of things or leave it for another day. I took a break from it at The Mad House, then returned to scope things out.   I went to get some water at a shop very close to my guess as it was hot, noting a rather cute dog on the footpath as I walked past. After getting the water I realised the man attached to the cute dog was the ‘pol’ half of polfil! And there was the ‘fil’ half as well! We started chatting about looking for the cache, then made our way to my cacheWagon so they could meet Lottie.

So, with numbers and 2 cute dogs to distract muggles on our side, we went back to GZ to contemplate strategies. I said where I thought it would be, and somehow as the group passed the area Amelia extracted the cache. We all sat down to have a chat. The log was signed, the chatting continued. Polfil was worried that some youths were wondering what we were all up to, so we waiting them out – there’s always plenty to talk about between cachers (especially when 1 team uses Garmin and 1 team uses Magellan! Smile Eventually while I held the dogs polfil used their numbers to rehide the cache.  We chatted for quite a while – it was great!

Lottie and I headed to the north side of the river, then headed back eastwards to By the bridge, near the water.  It was a quick but satisfying find; I’ve driven past here so many times.  Next we were off to No Surf or Sand.  From my log:

Just in case anyone was getting disappointed thinking I was no longer a klutz and wouldn’t entertain you with my clumsy antics, I fell on my head at this cache. Yes – onto the top of my head. From the way I approached it I was headed downhill and Lottie was uphill of me. For some reason she didn’t want to come too close, so the lead was quite tight. I didn’t realise how much I was relying on the lead for balance, and she suddenly came closer to me as I was reaching and stretching – so on my head I went. But I had a good view of the cache then!

After grabbing some lunch (I’d promised Scott paella, however they were out), Lottie and I couldn’t help wanting to head back out again.  This time for a bit of a walk, but part way up Mt Wellington, so it would be cool.  Our target: Aqueducts.  This was yet another fantastic cache by Xorg & Pixelwarrior; they really know the Mountain & Ridgeway!  Lottie loved the walk, and I loved the bits of old aqueduct amongst the bush.

I stopped off at my office to pick up my laptop and noticed theUMP had just published a couple more caches.  I wasn’t overly eager to throw in the towel for the day yet, so headed out to Moo Juice.  As Lottie and I were headed across the field towards GZ, I could hear soem people following behind: it was DnA! (the cachers formerly known as akb123).  I waited up for them, and we headed to GZ together.  They made the find first – I was looking at a different possiblilty.  We chatted a bit as Lottie made a clown of herself (running up to someone else’s ball – then rolling on the grass and being dragged along upside down with the lead).  Very nice and unexpected to catch up with two caching teams in the field in one day!  We parted company, and Lottie and I did Come Retire To Tassie With Me.  What a strange day for Snuva: this was our second FTF for the day!!  With that we headed home.  A relaxing and enjoyable day.
