Euro14 Day 29: Headed north through the countryside

Temperature: Min 10°C; Max 24°C.
Weather: Sunny / partly cloudy / rainy patch.

We awoke to a bright and sunny day in Buckingham.

Crazy intersection in Buckingham

One of the reasons we’d stayed in Buckingham was that this is the area that Flora Thompson lived in and wrote about in her fictionalised autobiographies about Lark Rise, Candleford, and Candleford Green. We first heard of them in the Lark Rise to Candleford TV series, but we also enjoyed the books. In the books, Buckingham was called ‘Candleford’ and Fringford was ‘Candleford Green’. We visited Fringford, and it was fun imagining what it was like in Thompson’s day. She wrote her books later in life about when she was much younger and about a time when the rural life that had not changed much in centuries was quickly being modernised. Fringford certainly had been, but we could still imagine Candleford Green there.

We had breakfast in Bicester, then wandered north. We were headed north to a village near Chester where we had accommodation for the night, however we took lovely small roads through the countryside stopping where our whimsy took us – such as this lovely village with a thatched church.

We also had a good snicker at place names.

We stopped in Shrewsbury for a late lunch / afternoon tea. It’s a lovely town; we’d like to explore more one day.
In Shrewsbury

We checked into the most fabulous B&B ever, Foxley Brow House, and after a welcoming tea and settling in met our friend Miranda at the local pub for dinner and a few drinks. Eskil was quite taken with the animals out back!
