Day 11: Pinnacles

Scott at Bear Gulch Reservoir Bear Gulch Cave Trail, Pinnacles National Monument Bear Gulch Cave Trail, Pinnacles National Monument Steep and Narrow! Pinnacles National Monument

When some plans for the day fell through, we wound up heading down to Pinnacles National Monument for some bushwalking and geocaching.  As we hadn’t planned the trip and just went on the spur of the moment, we wound up bushwalking in the hottest part of the day.  And it was hot!  However we lived to tell the tale – and log our geocaches!  Below is a map of our finds, then our geocache logs.

Our LogThis was our first stop for my husband and I as we arrived at Pinnacles for a few hours of bushwalking. He spoke with the ranger about a route for us to walk while I read the displays for information – not only on the geology of the area but a wide variety of subjects. Then we hit the trails for some bushwalking in the hottest part of the day – not by design, but because other plans had fallen through so this was just the time we arrived! After our long walk in the heat, we were so excited to see the carpark near the Visitor’s Centre!Thank you for the cache.

Our Log12.39 pm Yes, we can confirm that there is an elevation gain with no shade! We originally had plans with someone today, but when they fell through we decided on the spur of the moment to go to Pinnacles. So we arrived here just in time to bushwalk in the heat of the day – not ideal, but we’ve walked in worse. After getting some advice from a ranger at the Bear Gulch Visitor Centre, we went up the Condor Gulch Trail to the High Peaks Trail, through the Steep and Narrow section, across the Rim Trail to the Bea Gulch Reservoir, then back via the Bearch Gulch Caves and Moses Spring Trail.Along the way, we found the answer to this EarthCache – Snuva’s first. I enjoyed having this one as it pointed out something we wouldn’t have otherwise noticed and gave us interesting info as well!Thank you very much for the cache!

Our Log16:56 Found this one the way back from hiking at Pinnacles. When the Pinnacles event happened, I enjoyed seeing the photos and reading everyone’s comments. And now I’m REALLY glad for this event with all the caches hidden to supplement it! And this was a great cache – a muggle wouldn’t notice it, but an easy find for a cacher. Thank you again, sloigo!

Our Log16:59 Big smile as a I walk towards this one and saw where the name came from. And the store nearby had ICE CREAM. The chocolate was much nicer than the vanilla, which was too sweet. This is important as we’d gone bushwalking at Pinnacles after other plans fell through. We had more than enough water with us, but no trail snacks. So I remember this cache mostly for taking us to the campground store – thank you!

Our Log17:38 Great camo, sloigo! And a great view too – not just of the valley, but of the San Andreas mutilated hills as well.We found this cache after a day of bushwalking at Pinnacles. So many great swaps it took a bit to figure out what was the log book, however took nothing / left nothing. Thank you for the cache!

Our Log17:46 As we drove back from Pinnacles after a day of bushwalking, I navigated from cache to cache and for the most part my husband stayed in the car. Well, this is one of the exceptions – he came with me and grabbed the cache before I had even found GZ. Hrumph. And might I say, the coordinates were spot on! Thank you for the cache.

Our Log17:53 Found it while caching our way home from a (sweaty) visit to Pinnacles. The cache was easily found as an un-camoflaged edge was visible from a distance. Noticing from the description that this has been muggled a few times, I hid it a bit better (I hope) taking advantage of the cache’s camo and local materials.Thank you for the cache sloigo!

Our Log18:12 An easy find on the drive back from bushwalking at Pinnacles. I had noticed the reservoir on the way past in the morning but assumed there would be a cache here to give me a reason to stop on the way home. It was difficult to view the reservoir at this time of day with all the sun glaring off the water and out of the western sky. However it is nice to see water in a reservoir – in Australia we are having a drought and many dams are empty. Thank you for the cache.

Our Log18:16 I found this easily on the drove back from Pinnacles. I was a little worried the house close by might think they had an extra for dinner (but I was starving – if they’d offered I would have been there). But all was well, signed and logged safely. Thank you for the cache.

Our Log18:19 A nice easy find on our way back after a day bushwalking at Pinnacles. I was impressed with how many caches there were for such a ‘blink and you’ll miss’ it town. Told my husband what I’d read on the plaque when I got back in the car – he said he’d read about the object being discussed in one of the books he read before leaving Australia. I almost left my GPSr on top of the marker but remembered it before we’d driven too far! Thank you for the cache.
