Day 5B: Arrival in California

Ahh – arrival on solid ground, where we are able to walk, go to the toilet, put our elbows anywhere we’d like, even bend and unbend our legs!  We were exhausted – no sleep on the flight, and we’d spent as much time as possible while in Tokyo being out and about in the tiring humidity.  So we were really looking forward to just finding my dad and being able to not think.  US immigration shouldn’t be cause a problem, right?  Well, first we stood in the slowest line of all.  We persevered thinking that it was pointless changing lines as that one would instantly slow down.  For whatever reason, it didn’t.  Slowly, slowly we made our way to the front – only to find out we hadn’t been given the paperwork we needed.   We can only assume that as some of the only Caucasians on the JAL flight, they just figured we were Americans.  So out of the line we go to complete the paperwork, and then the hostile immigration clerk finally let us through.  Japan Airlines organises thing quite well.  They have a gentleman who assists passengers coming on and off their flights, and when we got to our luggage carrousel he was watching over our bags, 2 of the last 3 from our flight.

Finally we exited the entry hall and saw dad.  We caught the BRIGHT green shuttle to the mini, and we were off to Morgan Hill.  Before leaving Australia I’d had hopes of dropping in on a caching event on our way past – but we were exhausted and felt sooo grungy!  So off we went to Morgan Hill – to showers, clean clothes, etc.  Woo-hoo!

It was fantastic to catch up with family and friends.  That night we all went over to the winery for a BBQ.  Lots of nice wine and food in a perfect setting under the stars in perfect short sleeve temperature.  What a fantastic world and time we live in.  Waking up in Tokyo and going to bed in California!  By this time (11:30PM) we had been awake for 36 hours straight so it was time to sleep.  Sweet, sweet sleep.Â
