17 Months Old

Obviously the biggest thing in the past month has been Eskil’s second Christmas and new year.  And of course the fun things about that is have a week and a half off at home with his doggie and parents.  Unfortunately we came down with a summer cold for the first part of the break.

New things in Eskil’s life this month:

  • Eskil walks – and runs – quite well now.  In fact, in order to give him a good run during the day when we are home we take him up onto the rooftop deck to go wild.  A couple weeks ago we took Lottie to the South Hobart Oval for some off-lead galloping, and I was surprised how much and how far Eskil ran too!  He’s not great at going up or down hills as he hasn’t had much experience at it, but he certainly likes checking things out.  And he only like holding hands if he’s doing something difficult like going up or down a curb.
  • When they are up on the rooftop deck, Lottie and Eskil love chasing each other.  Sometimes Lottie gets really excited and pulls off Eskil’s socks; Eskil isn’t so sure about that!
  • Eskil has invented the ‘ta’ game.  I have always said ‘ta’ when he gives me something, and he’s caught onto it and thinks it is what you say when you give or receive something.  So he will get something – an oven mitt out of the kitchen is a favourite – and walk to you with it saying ‘ta. . .tas. . .ta’.  He’s quite pleased when you take it from you, but usually wants you to give it back to him soon.  He also understands things like ‘ta for Daddy’, i.e. give it to your daddy. ‘Ta’ is his favourite word – aside from Lottie. Which he somehow pronounces as if he is saying ‘Hercule’ with a heavy French accent.
  • Eskil will sleep in anything, unlike this time last year when he would scream if he wasn’t in his angel suit. This is useful as on extremely hot nights we can put him in bed with just a nappy. On hot nights I also give him a sippy cup of water. He sleeps any which way in his cot and never stays under the blanket.
  • Eskil loves beating his chest to make Tarzan noises and using his hand or thumb to quickly cover and uncover his mouth while making noises.
  • Eskil loves climbing, which is scary.  He’ll push a dining room chair around the room to then climb up on something.  If he’s in the lounge room, he climbs up on the lounge.  Climb, climb, climb!  One day I was trying to cook, so was annoyed he kept pushing a chair around to try to climb on things.  So I put the chair up on the dining room table.  He looked excited/happy, clapped his hands, then was ready to move another chair so he could get onto the table and onto the chair. . .it would have never ended until he reached the sky!
  • Scott and I have taken to calling bananas ‘monkey sticks’ so Eskil doesn’t know what we’re talking about.  Because if he hears bananas being discussed he wants one or more NOW.
  • Eskil has a strange new trick where he puts his hands next to his left ear – at an angle so the fingers are facing up – and claps the top hand onto the bottom one.  Very, very cute.
  • Eskil now has a sausage roll at the farmers’ market and doesn’t cry about there not being pumpkin.  Thank goodness.
