Euro14 Day 16: Edinburgh – Ballachulish

Temperature: Min 9°C; Max 20°C.
Weather: SUNNY with some dramatic clouds for variety.

As we left Edinburgh, we were able to leave via a few streets that feature in the books of one of our favourite authors, Alexander McCall Smith. Indeed, we’d been ‘living’ in the neighbourhood.
The end of Scotland Street
We headed north over the Forth Road Bridge, and I think Eskil was napping before we reached Perth.
1st Scottish car nap
After skirting Perth, we headed up the A9 past Blair Athol.
Scottish tractor eggs
We turned off at the A889, and had a coffee stop at Dalwhinnie before continuing on to the A86. It was stunning scenery, even if they lied about the stags.

We headed north to Urquart Castle. My mum and I visited there years ago, and it has changed so much. Back then there was just a lay-by at the side of the road, but now there’s a car park, gift shop, entry fee – and mobility scooters for those less able to get around. My mum nabbed one and zipped all over! Eskil thought it was great – but that climbing the castle was even better. Another change in the past 20 years: it was SUNNY. Crazy.

Our hotel for the night was The Ballachulish, and it was quite nice. It was like an old stately home (Scott, Eskil, and my room was in this bit) with a new extension (my parents’ room was in this bit). It had a lovely restaurant, and stunning common rooms. We had a lovely dinner in the restaurant.
