Day 16: Angel Island

Early morning on Market Street, San FranciscoWe checked out of the Mosser fairly early, leaving our bags behind to be picked up later, and caught a bus to the Embarcadero to purchase tickets for the ferry to Angel Island. The ferry offices weren’t open yet, so we did a couple geocaches.  After we purchased tickets to Angel Island, I went off to Pier 39 to purchase a stupid hat;  I’d left my hat behind and thought a stupid hat was better than none!

On the ferry to Angel Island, looking back at San FranciscoThe ferry ride to Angel Island was fantastic. The views back towards the City and around the bay were just gorgeous. As we went across I also was also cross checking a map of the island with the geocaches in my GPSr to try to decide what route we could take and still make our ferry back. In the end we decided to take the coastal track and headed off clockwise around the island.

View from Angel Island
We geocached. We had a look through old quarantine and immigration buildings. We enjoyed the vews. There was sun; it was good I had a hat. There were some people zooming around the island on segways; I hope they were enjoying themselves as they certainly looked silly. I had to not take too long at each cache as we didn’t want to miss the ferry, and as we were getting close to the end we stopped caching and upped the pace. It was hot and not entirely pleasant, so you can imagine our frustration when we arrived back at the jetty and found out he ferry was running late. Oh well, at least it gave us time to have some water!

After arriving back at the Embarcadero we bussed our way to pick up our backpacks at the Mosser, then made our way to retrieve the bumblebee from the Masonic Centre. Then I was on a mission: I wanted to go to dak’s all-time favourite geocache: Columba. We arrived not long before closing so couldn’t dawdle, but we enjoyed the architecture and the personal tributes all around. Dak died less than a year later, so in retrospect that find is even more special.

We were now in quite heavy traffic, but there was nothing for it but to push on. I chose a rather creative route through SF to 101, and we eventually arrived back in Morgan Hill.

What to do, what to do?!We hoofed it up to this appropriately named cache, good not just for the location but also for the time of day we found it. Such great views! I did a bit of CITO as well.Thank you for the cache.

Another nice spot on Angel Island. This was our second find, after Olive, before we decided to turn around and go around the island clockwise. We were unsure if we would make it completely around the island as the posted walking times, which didn’t include caching-time of course, would really be cutting it fine. In the end we made it back to the dock in time – but the ferry was half an hour late!Thank you for the cache.

10:54 Easily found – after my husband made a noise that made me wonder if there are rattlesnakes on the island! This one was early in our trip on the Perimeter Road and had me trilled that the caches weren’t spaced far apart. As we were only on the island from the first ferry from Pier 41 and leaving again on the next, I was as happy for the finds as my husband was for the views!Thank you for the cache.

12:33 As this one was just a quick detour on our way around the island, my husband let me find this one. He’s not an ogre – we just were uncertain how long it would take to walk around the island and didn’t want to miss the ferry! Angel Island has great views, but also interesting history. Thank you for another cache taking us close to the island’s history.

12:40 We used team work to get this one! As we were making our way around Angel Island on the Perimeter Road, my husband was getting more and more nervous that we would be late for the 1 pm ferry (and I was getting more and more nervous that I wouldn’t get to cache enough!). As we were approaching this one, he was in the lead. When he was passing what I assumed would be GZ, I called out to him and asked him to check – and by the time I was on the spot to sign he had a log roll for me.Thank you for the cache!

We had tried to visit here the day before, however as there was a funeral taking place I didn’t want to stop even long enough to find the information. However as we left our cacheMobile (the Bumbling Bee) in a car park across the street overnight, I had another opportunity to visit the next day and get the required information. And isn’t that stained glass lovely from inside?!Thank you for the cache.

17:00 My friend dak of dak’s Emu Mob told me this is his favourite cache. As he as the most finds of any Australian cacher and has cached in several countries, as well as all over Oz, I thought I should include this cache in my trip! I only wish I’d allowed more time to explore. We arrived not long before closing so were not able to take more than a short look around. But it moved me – especially as I have Snuva’s ashes at home waiting for a final resting place.Thank you very much for the cache.
