Day 15: Escape towards Alcatraz

Well, not exactly Alcatraz! We decided to go to San Francisco and stay over night. That way we could walk all day and not have to face the drive home in traffic when we were tired. We headed off from Morgan Hill at 9:15 am in the bumblebee (yellow Mini). We breakfasted at the House of Bagels in San Jose, then headed up 280. It was clear in San Jose, however the fog came in as we approached the City. Once we were in San Francisco we skirted Lake Merced to the Great Highway to make our way along the coast. Our first stop was a museum, the Palace of the Legion of Honour. Of course I had to do the cache near our parking spot first, then we spent a while wandering from room to room until we finally reached Museum Burnout.

After this we headed to the headlands to do a nearby cache, then cached our way through China Beach, Sea Cliff, drove through the Presidio to Inspiration Point. We lunched at a place near the corner of California and Laurel (Asquew?). After this it was time to be tourists and log the virtual and take a photo at Alamo Square. We enjoyed not just the most famous of the houses on the square; many not in THE photo are just as lovely and sometimes impressive. And I liked that it is a dog off-lead area!

We enjoyed walking down the streets, looking through shops, and buying cheap pillow slips to take home. When we’d had our fill of China Town, we were feeling rather empty to went to a safé a friend had recommended, Stella’s on Columbus. We had coffees and pastries, then walked to the apartment block from Veritgo and Tales of the City. We then retrieved our backpacks from the bumblebee (still parked at the Masonic Centre) and made our way to the hotel we’d booked, the Mosser.

We ditched the bumblebee in a car park in the Masonic Centre opposite Grace Cathedral. I attempted to do a virtual geocache, however there was a funeral service in progress. We had a look at the dogs having fun in the park opposite, then made our way to China Town.

We had a short rest, then went back out for a bit of a walk. Eventually we wound up at the Persimmon Café for dinner. Afterwards I had to do the Yerba Buena geocache around the corner from our hotel. Then I went to have a shower while Scott enjoyed the novelty of looking through the Virgin Megastore after 11 pm.

11:31 Our first find in San Francisco during our 2-day trip within a trip. I spotted the cache easy, but as it was early in the day took the polite route down (then the more direct route up!).Warning to future finders: there are a couple sprigs of poison oak on the embankment nearby. They are easily avoided if your eyes are open and looking at more than just the arrow on your GPSr.After finding the cache, we had a great time exploring the museum. Inside, I found evidence that caching has been going on for hundreds of years! (I’ll upload the photo soon – it’s on my laptop.)

15:15 I was quite pleased to find that the place you need to stand for THAT photograph is in a dog off-lead area. This means there are lots of happy dogs running and getting petted, and lots of happy tourists who are visiting San Francisco and missing the dogs they left at home who get to pet pups! My husband really wanted to find this spot and take a photo, and I was really pleased there was a cache here.Visiting here reminded me of seeing this spot on the TV / film version of Tales of the City. They filmed the scene where Mrs Madrigal meets Edgar Halcyon in this park. Mrs M shared her foccacia bread sandwich with him.Thank you for the cache!
