Happy 5th Cachiversary to Snuva! On 21 March 2004 my sister was visiting from California. She’d been telling me about this geocaching thing, and I just didn’t get it from her description. Also she wasn’t the most brilliant with technology. She had brought a travel bug with her, however her odd way of using a GPSr meant we didn’t find any physical caches. (She would stare at the numbers and try to determine if we were getting closer or further away from the cache based on whether the numbers were going up or down – remember, this is long before Google Maps!). So my first log on a geocache was on a virtual, Trigpoint Scenes 1. Since it was a virtual, part of me is a little disappointed. On the other hand, maybe it was a great cache to have as my first. Back then there were only a couple caches in the Hobart area, and this one is on top of Mt Wellington – my beloved mountain, which overlooks my life here in Hobart.
In any case, fast forward 5 years to 21 March 2009, and here I am truely addicted to caching. This time my visitor from California is Geokashers – just some random cacher I’d invited to stay at our place as he mentioned in the GBA forum that he might be headed to Oz. 🙂 I was looking forward to showing off Mt Wellington to him, so we headed to the summit and cached our way down – through different climates, views, terrain, flora, and historic locations. Sound like the best place to go geocaching in the world? Absolutely!

Those first 4 caches were only short walks (although Geokashers has already found out that denium shorts aren’t really the go for Tasmanian flora!). Next we did a few walks – to Sphinx Rock, then out on the North – South Track (a mountain bike track I love because the trail construction impresses me so much) and back via the Shoobridge Track.

When we got back within sight of the cacheWagon at Shoobridge Bend, we faced an unwelcome vista: a stretcher about to be inserted into the back of an ambulance, a police car, miscellaneous cyclists with bikes strewn all around, and police officers interviewing a young couple with a rental car. It didn’t look like a good scene, so we just kept out of the way until the ambulance had gone. However we realised some of the cyclists – now being interviewd by the police – were pointing to the back bummper of the cacheWagon. Oh dear. We entered the fray and found out the story. Having cycled up to the summit earlier, the cyclists were heading down Pinnacle Road when one of them came around Shoobridge Bend, hit a pothole which threw him against a rental car headed uphill (and somehow broke off the mirror on the opposite side of the car), the impact of which then sent him straight into our rear bumper, and he landed underneath our car. Oh dear. His mates said he wasn’t too badly off – nothing broken they thought, but some really nasty scrapes and bruises. However his carbon fibre bike was totalled.
While waiting around so be sure all was clear, the totalled bike would get back transported down on civilisation, etc I was able to take a quick snap to help Geokashers remember the occasion:
Next up my husband and Geokashers headed to Rocky Whelan’s Cave (Rocky Whelan was a bushranger who hid out on Mt Wellington) while I found a wide enough spot to park the car, then we had a walk to the obigatory waterfall cache.

After this Scott headed back to where the car was now parked at the head of Bracken Lane while we searched in vain for the track to Jackson’s Bend. I didn’t have a good map with me as I thought I knew all the tracks we’d take. Several different generations of sinage in this are meant one sign promised the track was ahead but others didn’t mention it. We woudn up taking the Fingerpost Track to Huon Road and walking along that to Jackson’s Bend. Not ideal, but it did the job. And so I was able to log my only finds for the day. . .

Well, you said it’s OK to log a second time, so Snuva has put her paw print in the log at the new location. Today was my 5th cacheversary, and we spent the day with geokashers, who is visiting from California. We had tried to come down from Bracken Lane after finding Paddy’s Fallen, however took the wrong track down to Huon Road. Eventually made it back up the hill after a find at Jackson’s Tunnel. geokashers enjoyed being in amongst all the ferns.While part of the team was headed to the cache, the other part of the time had the pleasure of observing some noobies heading towards Jackson’s Tunnel.. No idea of caching name as the response to ‘I’m Snuva’ was to give me a muggle name; whoever it is will soon learn I’m only interested in their name in the caching world.Thank you for the cache! |

I spent today (my 5th cachiversary) showing off Mt Wellington to geokashers (from California). I must say for such a simple cache it was rather a memorable one. Firstly, geokashers and I headed down to this one from Paddy’s Fallen while my husband retrieved the cacheMobile from Bracken Lane to meet us at Jackson’s bend. Well, um, we took the Fingerpost track instead, so then had to follow the Huon Road back to this area. We met up with Scott, then headed for this cache – and I immediately saw the wrong spot that looked like the right spot. However, alas, it was wrong. When I arrived at the REAL GZ I found the cache quickly though!Thank you for the find!(I will upload a photo or two when I’m on faster connection!) |

It was well into the afternoon at this point, so we stopped into the Fern Tree General Store for some toasted samidges. (That’s right, we actually stopped for food. Disgraceful! Call ourselves geocachers?!) Next I subjected Geokashers to a multi along the Pipeline Track that shows off the area’s old aqueducts, then we headed for some caches along the Hobart Rivulet in South Hobart.

The final cache find for Geokashers of the day was a bit of Snuva history. This cache is one of the 3 I first placed back in 2004. This one has been re-worked a bit – in fact all three of them have in the five years since they were set out. Geokashers tooka bunch of bug an pathtag photos before we called it a day. |
